This article establishes procedures for Laboratory testing, reporting and accepting samples of guardrail, guard cable and plastic blocks. Refer to Sec 1040 for MoDOT's specifications.

1040.5.1 Procedure

Laboratory tests to be performed on the sample are designated by the inspector in the remarks area of AASHTOWARE Project (AWP).

1040.5.1.1 Chemical Tests

Procedure for determining the mass of coating shall be according to AASHTO T65. This method shall be used in all cases where the area of the test specimen can be accurately calculated. On specimens shaped so that the area cannot be calculated, the mass of coating shall be determined with a magnetic gauge in accordance with ASTM E376. Mechanical testing of bolts and nuts shall be performed according to EPG 712.3.2.2 Physical Tests - Bolts and Nuts. Dimensions of bolts, nuts, and washers shall be checked for conformance to Standard Drawing 606.00.

Dimensions, fabrication, and mechanical properties of 1/2 in. (12.5 mm) cable shall conform to ASTM A475.

Nominal dimensions of plastic blocks are to be measured in the Laboratory for conformance to Standard Plan 606.00. Visual determination should be made of the block to determine compliance for fabrication. If the block meets the requirements for dimensions and visual inspection, void size and spacing should be determined and reported. Dimensions, void spacing and void size should be measured and reported to the nearest 1/16 in. (2 mm).

The sample record shall be completed in AASHTOWARE Project (AWP), as described in AWP MA Sample Record, General, and shall indicate acceptance, qualified acceptance, or rejection. Appropriate remarks, as described in EPG 106.20 Reporting, are to be included in the remarks to clarify conditions of acceptance or rejection. Test results shall be reported on the appropriate templates under the Tests tab.
