These Maintenance planning guidelines apply to both major and minor roads.

Definition
The time and expenses incurred for the application of chemicals for the control and eradication of weeds and other vegetation.
Purpose
To control vegetation through chemical application.
Scheduling
As needed as recommended by product labels and Herbicides and Roadsides.
Recommended Equipment
- Truck or tractor-mounted sprayer
- Backpack sprayer
- Handheld sprayer
- Traffic Control Equipment, refer to Traffic Control for Field Operations.
Recommended Material
- Various weed and brush control chemicals
- Fresh water supply
Recommended Procedure
1. Read the label.
2. Prepare chemicals.
3. Place traffic control devices as needed.
4. Apply chemicals at the specified rate and in the appropriate manner.
5. Remove traffic control devices.
6. Clean all spray equipment thoroughly.
7. Enter data into the Herbicide Database.
Safety
Follow label recommendations for handling and spraying chemicals. Personnel should follow MoDOT licensing policies. Be aware of wind direction and velocity and the proximity of residences, crops and gardens. Wear all appropriate Personal Protection Equip (PPE). Refer to Safety Policies, Rules & Regulations-Employee Handbook .
Other Considerations
Applicable Material Safety Data Sheets are required in spray vehicles. Contact district roadside personnel for assistance.
