824.1 Maintenance Planning Guidelines for Litter Pick-Up

These Maintenance planning guidelines apply to both major and minor roads.

Definition

The time and expenses incurred for litter clean-up and disposal of rubbish, advertising signs, dead animals, etc. from the right of way. Also includes dumping fees. This includes time and expenses for the Adopt-A-Highway litter pick-up program.

In District 3, the Assistant District Engineer hands a trash bag to a fast-food customer waiting for his lunch.

Purpose

To improve the right of way appearance and safety through the removal of rubbish, dead animals, and advertising signs.

Scheduling

As needed.

Recommended Equipment

  • Trucks
  • Traffic Control Equipment;

Refer to Traffic Control for Field Operations.

Recommended Material

Litter bags

Recommended Procedure

1. Place traffic control devices, as needed
2. Pick up litter, place in bags on shoulder
3. Place large pieces of debris on the shoulder
4. Put full trash bags and large debris into the truck
5. When loaded, the trash is taken to the disposal site
6. Remove traffic control devices

Safety

Wear all appropriate PPE.

Other Considerations

Be aware of hazardous material.
