822.10 Maintenance Planning Guidelines for Brush Cutting

These Maintenance planning guidelines apply to both major and minor roads.

Code: R414

Definition

The time and expenses incurred for brush cutting and tree removal.

Purpose

To provide adequate sight distance by the removal of brush and trees generally within 30 ft. of traveled way and as needed.

Scheduling

During winter months except for critical sight distance and hazardous trees and limbs.

Recommended Procedure

1. Place traffic control devices as needed.
2. Cut as close to the ground as possible.
3. Treat stumps with herbicide to prevent regrowth.
4. Dispose of cut material in accordance with roadside tree removal policy.
5. Dispose of brush and wood.

Safety

When trees are close to structures or power lines, removal should be performed by the utility company or by bonded specialists. Wear all appropriate PPE. Refer to the Safety Policies, Rules & Regulations-Employee Handbook.

Other Considerations

Check necessity for burning permit. Inmates shall not be used for burning vegetation.
