Prestressed girders are normally inspected at the fabricating plant. Inspection reports will be furnished by the Construction and Materials Division. Pre-stressed girders must be handled and stored in an upright position. Failure to observe pick-up points can cause serious damage to the girder. When pre-stressed girders arrive on the project, they should be checked for shipping or handling damage. Each unit should also be checked against the inspection report. Once girders have been erected forming of the deck and placement of concrete is similar to practices followed for steel structures. The units normally have appreciable camber until the deck is in place.

705.2 Materials Inspection for Sec 705

Please refer to Fabricating Prestressed Concrete Members for Bridges for inspection of Prestressed Concrete Members for Bridges.

705.3 Laboratory Testing for Sec 705

705.3.1 Scope

This guidance establishes procedures for Laboratory testing and reporting samples of prestressing steel strand and concrete cylinders representing material used in prestressed concrete members for bridges.

705.3.2 Procedure

705.3.2.1 Prestressing Strand

Tests for stress-relieved strand shall consist of examination for fabrication requirements and tension tests performed according to AASHTO M203 or AASHTO M204, as applicable.

705.3.2.2 Concrete Cylinders

Concrete cylinders shall be tested for compressive strength according to AASHTO T22.

705.3.3 Sample Record

705.3.3.1 Prestressing Strand

The sample record shall be completed in AASHTOWARE Project (AWP), as described in AWP MA Sample Record, General, and shall indicate acceptance, qualified acceptance, or rejection. Appropriate remarks, as described in EPG 106.20 Reporting, are to be included in the report to clarify conditions of acceptance or rejection. Test results shall be reported on the appropriate template under the Tests tab.

705.3.3.2 Concrete Cylinders

Test results shall be reported through AWP with the notation, "Specimens submitted for compressive strength at the age indicated and the test results are for informational purposes only".
